George sailed to England on June 24, 1915. He arrived in France in February 1916. George served with the 39th Battalion, 18th (Western Ontario) Battalion and 5th Field Company, Canadian Engineers during the First World War. His parents were Thomas Hughes and Euphemia McPherson. Following his father's death, his mother married William Petteplace. She resided in Greenock Township when George enlisted. He was killed in action west of Lens, France on July 28, 1917 when a high explosive shell burst in the trench near him.Sources & Links
