Charles served with the original 18th Canadians for 28 months. He resided in Detroit before moving to Tipon, where he bought a general store in August 1931 and operated it over 16 years before selling it due to his poor health. After that he was self-employed and worked as a ranger for the Michigan State Conservation Department. He married Vera Langley in Detroit on May 29, 1926.
