1. There is a discrepancy in the records concerning Nelson's birth date, the gravestone indicates the birth date August 16, 1898; military records indicate August 15, 1897. His Ontario birth registration confirms the 1898 birth date. At the time of his enlistment in April, he would have been 17 years old, turning 18 in August that year. 2. During the Second World War, Nelson worked as an electronic communicator handling wireless communications with ships. He moved around Canada into many places during his service from 1942 to 1945. Following the war, he purchased land near Stockdale, Ontario, possibly with some assistance from the Soldiers’ Settlement Land Act (Land Veteran Land Act settlement number 94372).
