Notes

John fought in the South African Boer War (1899-1902). In the First World War, he enlisted with the 71st Battalion but was then transferred to the 50th Battalion on June 11, 1916; then to the 51st Battalion on June 22, 1916; and then back to the 50th Battalion on July 2, 1916.
