Notes

Alfred enlisted in the Army in 1943 when he was engaged in sheet metal work in Galt. He spent 3 years on the frontlines during WWII. He received basic training in Listowel, and then went to Petawawa for more training. He also trained for three months in Suffield, Alberta. In May 1944 he travelled overseas by ship, landing in Liverpool. They then took the train to London, England. During his military service, he worked on bridges and roads and/or managed prisoners assisting with that work. He worked in the vicinity of the artillery guns positioned along the side of the roads, and the smoke of the cordite burning after the guns were fired was aggravating, and caused Alfred to be hospitalized a few times due to the headaches. Alfred was in the Netherlands near Amsterdam as the war was ending.
