Notes

Russel was taking a radio repair course when Canada entered the war in 1939. He enlisted in the Air Force, was sent for radar training, and served as a radar mechanic. His first post was on the south coast of England, then was transferred to the mountains above Hong Kong where he was taken as a prisoner of war by Japan. He was released at the end of the war.
