Also served with the 27th Battalion in France. He travelled to England aboard the SS Olympic and home aboard the SS Llandovery Castle. Wilfred returned home on June 17, 1918 after having his right leg amputated below the knee due to a shell wound. SS Llandovery Castle was torpedoed off southern Ireland on 27 June 1918 on its return voyage.
