Hyslop left Scotland and settled in Saskatchewan. From there, he joined the 28th Battalion when the First World War broke out. He was wounded twice in 1916 in Belgium, the second time seriously, and recuperated in England. In March 1917, he married Jennie Fletcher, an Olympic gold medalist swimmer, in Leicester, England. In 1917 he was also sent back to the front. He continued to serve until the war ended in 1918. Five of Hyslop's six children also served in the Canadian Military: Irving H. Scott Hyslop, Douglas Hyslop, Donald Hyslop, Robin Hyslop and Maxwell Hyslop.
