Notes
Donald was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Martyn of Ripley, and husband to Jeanetta Grace Martyn. At the time of his enlistment, he was working in British Columbia as a school teacher/school inspector. He served in France with the 47th and 44th Battalions. In late 1916 he was wounded badly enough that he was sent back to Canada for convalescent leave. He returned to the front in 1917, and as a result of continued gallant and distinguished service, he was awarded the Military Cross twice. He also earned the Distinguished Service Order, as well as the French Croix-de-Guerre. He was mentioned in despatches and was wounded for the second time in April, 1918. He is referenced in the War Diaries of the 44th Battalion on September 7th, 1918 and April 22nd, 1918 in the link above.Sources & Links
