Notes
James Lothian was the son of Helen Lothian and husband to the late Margaret McElroy Lothian. He emigrated to the US in 1882. He was noted in an article in the Paisley Advocate as residing in the area for about nine years, working for several farmers in Elderslie and Bruce Township. According to that same article, after failing to enlist in Toronto, he tried again in Montreal. His service files state that he enlisted on the S.S. “Leeland” (at sea). James served in France with the 1st Battalion. He went missing after action near Givenchy on June 15, 1915. [Note: the dates of the newspaper articles and the date of death do not seem to match, however other information in his service files and the newspaper articles seem to suggest this is the same man.]Sources & Links
