John was born in the Parish of Worth County of Sussex, England to John and Sarah. John emigrated to Canada and lived in Walkerton with his wife, Ethel, and children, Rupert, Thomas, and Ethel. After enlisting in the 147th Grey O.S. Battalion, C.E.F., he was later taken on strength into the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion. He served in France 25 months before returning home to Walkerton.
