After participating in the Battle of Messines and Hooge, and fighting for seven months on the Ypres Salient, Bert was taken Prisoner of War on June 2, 1916. He spent time at Dulman Prison Camp, Germany, following which he spent time at a stone quarry. After four months, he was moved to a farm, then back to Dulman Prison and Cologne Prison after attacking a guard. Upon returning to the farm, he attempted two escapes, only to be captured and imprisoned again. He was released after the Armistice, walked 10 miles to a station and crossed hte Holland border. He reached England on Dec. 12, 1918, and returned to Walkerton, ON, on March 28, 1918. His mother was Mrs. Sarah Runstedler in Walkerton.News Clippings
