Garnet, who was known as Gary, enlisted one week shy of his 16th birthday, September 12, 1939 with the Toronto Scottish Regiment. He arrived in the United Kingdom in August 1940 just prior to the Battle of Britain. He completed training at Ringway as an Infantry Parachutist. In support of the Royal Regiment of Canada, in August 1942, landed in France as part of the Dieppe Raid. His second landing in France was at Normandy, June 6, 1944 with the 2nd Candian Division. In the following battles he received shrapnel wounds in France and Holland. While advancing into Germany, Gary received a serious wound and was medically evacuted to Canada. In January of 1952, Gary re-enlisted with the Royal Canadian Regiment in Korea. Later He continued to serve as aa parachutist infantryman in Germany and Canada, retiring from the service in 1974 with the rank of Sergeant. During his time in the military, Gary became known as "Geep".
