George emigrated to Canada from Scotland before enlisting for military service. He is believed to have resided locally in the area(s) of Owen Sound or Meaford. Following his initial flying training in the UK, he was posted to number 59 Operational Training Unit at what is now Carlisle airport. This was to be the final part of his fighter pilot training. His death occurred during training when his plane impacted the upper slopes of Lowther hill.
