Finnie was the son of Catherine McKinnon of Glammis, ON. Finnie was wounded in the Battle of Somme, and received the Military Medal at Sanctuary Wood and for bravery and the Medal of Distinguished Service. Feeling a greater obligation to his country, he later transferred to the Royal Air Force where he served as a Lewis Machine Gun Instructor until being repatriated in February of 1919 at the end of his military service.
