Balaklava Presbyterian Cemetery, Carrick Township

"This cemetery is 1 ½ miles south east of Mildmay on Highway 9. It is an old cemetery, restored and well cared for. The visitor drives in a old private lane and enters through a gate. While recording this in 1975 Mrs. Arnold met an older man from Didsbury, Alta, who had lived at the foot of the high hill on which the cemetery is located. He said there had once been stores, hotel and a cluster of homes but when the railway by passed it, with the station at Mildmay, only one building was left. May of the names on the stones can be found in the 1867 Bruce Directory and 1880 Atlas. Many stones have been set into a concrete base. In some cases some of the lettering was buried in the concrete and in others the age of the stone made it very difficult to read."
